Alain Godon

Cities in Alain Godon’s paintings seem to have their own temperament. Landmarks tilt, façades become expressive and ordinary street scenes develop unexpected plots. Born in Bourges, France, in 1964, Godon grew up in northern France with an architect uncle and later made pavement drawings in Paris and Brighton. Drawing, urban observation and the encounter with an audience formed the beginnings of a practice now centered on oil painting.

His canvases offer more than an imaginary tour of recognizable places. Signs, windows, vehicles and small figures create several stories within a single scene. Strong contours organize the composition, while changes of scale and viewpoint loosen the rules of perspective. Color holds these encounters together. The first impression may be playful, but sustained looking reveals a carefully arranged world in which even a minor detail can redirect the narrative.

Godon also carries his imagery into bronze sculpture, paper-cut works and the series he now calls 24 Hours. Begun in 2009 under the name BildoReliefo — a term that now belongs to its history — it reinterprets painted compositions through variations in color, light and apparent depth. Since his exhibition at the Musée départemental Matisse, each of these unique works is declined in twenty-four background colors, one for every hour of the day. These practices extend his pictorial vocabulary through distinct materials and methods, while oil on canvas remains central to his work.

His museum history includes Matisse-Godon: New York–Tahiti, l’architecture du rêve at the Musée départemental Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in 2017–2018, an invitation to respond to the role of travel in Matisse’s work. The Musée du Touquet-Paris-Plage examined his career in BIO in 2022–2023. In 2024, Godon revisite le musée de l’Annonciade presented his reinterpretation of two paintings from the Saint-Tropez museum’s collection.
