Carré De Soie

Alain Godon's Carré de Soie carries his painted world onto silk. Each square reproduces one of his own compositions — The Last Sleigh, Flying Cars, Right Turn Immediately, Dear John, Hello Father Christmas, Dreams are the Prerogative of the Poor, Elvis is Alive, The Gulliverian Face Lift — with the same saturated colour and the same wit that run through his canvases, from the sleigh gliding over a rooftop city to the traffic of a road that never quite behaves.

Produced in 2018, each design is a numbered edition of 40, on a traditional 90 × 90 cm square. These are not merchandise but small editions of the paintings themselves, and they are sold as such: every scarf leaves the gallery with its certificate of authenticity.

Collectors treat them two ways. Worn, the silk is a piece of Godon in motion. Framed — as we present several of them here — the square hangs like a print, the composition read in full and the silk lending it a depth that paper does not have. Both are offered: loose, or framed and ready to hang.
