MARKOWICZ FINE ART
Bernard Markowicz
Founder · Art Dealer · Collector
Bernard Markowicz’s relationship with art began long before it became his profession. A collector since his teens, he went on to build an entrepreneurial career in technology before entering the art world professionally and eventually founding Markowicz Fine Art.
Today, his approach to the gallery remains rooted in the same principles that shaped his earliest relationship with art: curiosity, conversation, long-term relationships and a belief that the right artwork should create a genuine personal connection.
Growing Up with Art
Art was present in Bernard Markowicz’s life from an early age.
He grew up in a family in which artists were present and where both art and the people who created it were treated with deep respect. His parents were not major collectors, but the works that entered the family home mattered. They had stories, prompted questions and regularly became subjects of genuine family discussion.
That environment shaped an understanding of art based less on accumulation than on curiosity, conversation and emotional connection.
Bernard purchased his first work of art at sixteen and began developing the instinct of a collector long before he imagined that art would one day become his profession.
An Unconventional Path
Before entering the art world professionally, Bernard pursued an unusually intensive academic and entrepreneurial path in France.
At ESTP in Paris, he studied mechanical and electrical engineering. At the same time, he completed a degree in economics at Université Paris-Dauphine and also pursued studies in accounting at CNAM.
Engineering was his formal discipline, but another field increasingly captured his attention: computing.
At the time, computer technology was still emerging. Bernard became fascinated by its possibilities and ultimately followed that curiosity into entrepreneurship rather than pursuing a conventional engineering career.
From Technology to Entrepreneurship
In 1987, Bernard founded MK Informatique in Paris, a software and technology company at a time when computing was rapidly beginning to transform business.
He spent the following years developing the company while remaining an active art collector.
The experience of building a business from the ground up would later influence the way he approached the gallery world: combining intuition with structure, remaining open to innovation and placing long-term relationships at the center of the business.
After building and eventually selling the technology company, Bernard was able to devote increasing attention to the passion that had accompanied him since his teenage years: art.
From Collector to Art Dealer
Bernard’s transition from collector to art dealer developed through Opera Gallery.
He was a partner in both the New York and Miami galleries from their creation and served as director of the Miami gallery.
The experience placed him at the intersection of artists, collectors and an increasingly international art market. More importantly, it transformed a lifelong personal engagement with art into a profession.
After leaving Opera Gallery, Bernard established GodonAmerica in 2009, initially developing the American market for French artist Alain Godon.
In 2010, he founded Markowicz Fine Art in Miami.
Building Markowicz Fine Art
From Miami, Markowicz Fine Art developed around a deliberately personal model: discover distinctive artistic voices, build meaningful relationships with artists over time and remain closely involved with the collectors who support their work.
The gallery became an early presence in Miami’s evolving contemporary art landscape and developed relationships with collectors throughout the United States and internationally.
Over the years, MFA’s program has brought together painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media, while Bernard’s involvement has extended from gallery exhibitions and art fairs to monumental works, public art projects, private collections and institutional relationships.
Some of those relationships have lasted for many years and evolved far beyond individual exhibitions or transactions.
A Personal Approach to Collecting
For Bernard, collecting should begin with understanding rather than urgency.
He encourages collectors to spend time with an artwork, ask questions about the artist, the idea, the medium and the circumstances in which it was created, and ultimately recognize whether a genuine connection exists.
That approach applies whether someone is acquiring a first work, developing an established collection or considering an important secondary-market opportunity.
The objective is not simply to complete a transaction. Sometimes the right advice is to wait. Sometimes it is to continue searching.
What matters is building a collection that remains meaningful beyond the moment of acquisition.
The relationship with an artwork should begin before the transaction.
Built Around Relationships
The human relationship remains central to Bernard’s view of the art business.
Artists need people willing to understand their work over time rather than only at a moment of commercial success. Collectors benefit from the same continuity: someone who knows what they have acquired, understands how their taste has developed and can speak candidly when a new opportunity appears.
In an art market increasingly shaped by digital platforms, remote transactions and vast quantities of information, Bernard believes that informed personal relationships have become more important, not less.
That philosophy continues to shape Markowicz Fine Art today.
Still Personal
Markowicz Fine Art has grown beyond the gallery Bernard founded in Miami in 2010.
Its activities now extend across artist representation, exhibitions, public and monumental projects, private advisory, secondary-market transactions and collaborations with collectors, designers and institutions internationally.
But the underlying philosophy has remained remarkably consistent.
Based in Miami, Bernard travels frequently between California, Chile and France, a rhythm that reflects both his personal life and the increasingly international nature of his work.
Bernard continues to work directly with artists and collectors, particularly where a relationship, an important acquisition or a long-term project benefits from personal involvement.
