Carole A. Feuerman

Carole A. Feuerman (b. 1945, Hartford, Connecticut) is an American sculptor whose work has played an important role in the development of contemporary Superrealism. Over a career spanning more than five decades, she has become internationally recognized for figurative sculptures that combine extraordinary technical precision with a quiet sense of introspection. Her iconic swimmers, often captured in moments of rest or contemplation, have become among the most recognizable images associated with contemporary hyperrealist sculpture. Raised in New York, Feuerman studied at the School of Visual Arts, Temple University, and Hofstra University. Her early career as an illustrator and designer developed the close observation of anatomy, surface, gesture, and expression that would later characterize her sculpture. As her practice evolved, the human figure became her central subject, not simply as an exercise in realism, but as a vehicle for exploring resilience, balance, vulnerability, and personal strength. Water occupies a particularly important place in Feuerman's visual language. Swimmers and bathers appear suspended between physical exertion and stillness, frequently with closed eyes, wet skin, droplets of water, and subtle traces of movement rendered with remarkable precision. The apparent realism of these figures draws the viewer closer, while their inward expressions suggest private emotional worlds that remain deliberately unresolved. Feuerman works across resin, bronze, stainless steel, cast marble, and other materials, producing sculptures that range from intimate figures to large-scale and monumental public works. This expansion in scale has allowed her distinctive approach to the body to move beyond galleries and museums into the urban landscape. Her monumental sculptures have been presented in prominent public settings including Park Avenue and the Seaport District in New York, Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, as well as international presentations connected with Paris, Venice, and other cultural destinations. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally and is represented in numerous museum, institutional, public, and private collections. These include the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, the Tampa Museum of Art, and Grounds for Sculpture, among others. Her work has also been presented at institutions including the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Throughout her career, Feuerman has continued to expand her sculptural vocabulary while remaining closely associated with the swimmers that established her international reputation. More recent bodies of work introduce new materials, monumental scale, mythology, and contemporary symbolism while maintaining her longstanding exploration of the body and human experience. Feuerman has received numerous international distinctions for her contribution to sculpture, including the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, she established the Feuerman Sculpture Foundation to support artists through exhibitions, education, professional development, and other initiatives. Carole A.
