Patrick Roger

Born in 1968 in Le Poislay, France, Patrick Roger lives and works in Sceaux, near Paris. His unconventional path into sculpture began through an intense engagement with material. Although initially recognized internationally for his work with chocolate and awarded the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 2000, Roger progressively developed a sculptural practice independent of the culinary world.

Chocolate often functions as his first modeling material: direct, physical and temporary. Forms developed through this process are subsequently translated into bronze, aluminum, iron, polished metal and other lasting materials. Moving freely between figuration and abstraction, Roger explores human and animal bodies, organic structures, balance, voids and the physical behavior of matter. The contrast between the fragility of the original material and the permanence of metal has become one of the defining characteristics of his work.

Roger’s sculpture has been presented in a number of significant cultural and art-world contexts. In 2015, at the invitation of Musée Rodin director Catherine Chevillot, he created a monumental work for the reopening of the museum in Paris. His sculptures were later presented at Christie’s Paris and at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo, where his 2018 exhibition was curated and designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh. His work has also appeared at PAD Paris, Galerie Sarto and in curated contemporary-art presentations including Chambres à Part in Paris.
