Patrick Roger’s First Exhibition in Japan
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Gallery 3, Tokyo, Japan
Patrick Roger’s first exhibition in Japan was presented at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo. Curated and designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh, TRAVELS TRAVEL(LER) created an immersive dialogue between sculpture, architecture and the viewer, presenting Roger’s work within one of Japan’s leading spaces devoted to contemporary design and creative culture.
An Architect’s Reading of a Sculptor
Lina Ghotmeh both curated and designed the exhibition, so the route through Gallery 3 was itself part of the work. Rather than lining the sculptures along a wall, she treated the room as a landscape to be crossed, letting distance, light and turning points decide how each piece was met.
Twenty Years of Material
The selection drew on two decades of Roger’s output, in aluminum, bronze, concrete and marble. Seen together in Tokyo, the works made his central concern legible to an audience meeting him for the first time: the passage from a soft, temporary material worked by hand to a form fixed for good.
Organisation
The exhibition was organised by Patrick Roger Sculpture in association with the French Embassy and the Institut français du Japon, and hosted by 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in its Gallery 3.
