Christophe Gaignon: When a Mirror Becomes Sculpture
Exploring light, color and perception through unique sculptural mirrors.
For French contemporary artist Christophe Gaignon, the mirror is far more than a reflective surface. It becomes a medium for artistic experimentation, an object capable of transforming color, light and the viewer’s perception of space.
Beyond the Conventional Mirror
Working with shaped and tinted glass, Gaignon creates sculptures that appear almost fluid, their reflections continually shifting with changes in perspective and illumination. His compositions blur the distinction between object and image, inviting viewers to experience the mirror as both a physical artwork and an optical environment.
The Language of Light and Color
A defining characteristic of Gaignon’s work is the interaction between curved glass surfaces and multiple optical elements. Rather than presenting a single uninterrupted reflection, his sculptures introduce overlapping lenses that fragment and transform the surrounding environment.
The resulting images possess a remarkable sense of depth. Colors seem to move through the glass, and reflections take on an abstract, sometimes almost cosmic quality. This dialogue between material and perception has become central to Gaignon’s artistic identity.
A Unique Work from 2022
Created in 2022, Miroir Concave double Rose & Or & 3 lentilles exemplifies this approach. The 118 cm circular sculpture combines rose-colored glass with an engraved polished brass mount and three optical lenses.
The composition incorporates luminous pink and golden tones, with reflections that shift toward violet and other colors according to the light. Its sculptural scale gives the work a strong architectural presence, while the optical elements create an intimate and constantly changing visual experience.
The accompanying certificate of authenticity, signed by Gaignon in Paris in July 2022, identifies the artwork as an original and unique piece.
Between Contemporary Art and Collectible Design
Gaignon’s international recognition reflects the unusual position of his work between contemporary sculpture and collectible design. His creations have been presented at art fairs including Art Miami and featured in architectural projects documented by Architectural Digest.
The appeal of these works lies in their ability to function as independent artworks while engaging directly with their surroundings. As the viewer changes position, the sculpture changes in response. The mirror becomes a living composition, revealing a new visual experience with every encounter.
