Biography

A Distinctive Artistic Vision

Christophe Gaignon, born in France in 1966, is a self-taught contemporary artist whose work occupies a distinctive territory between sculpture, glass art and collectible design. He did not come to glass through a design school: he developed his knowledge over years spent alongside antique dealers and decorators, and became fascinated by the expressive potential of glass and reflective materials.

Rather than treating the mirror as a purely functional object, he began exploring its ability to transform the viewer’s perception of space. His artistic vocabulary is characterized by luminous colors, curved reflective surfaces and compositions that suggest celestial bodies, optical instruments and abstract landscapes.

Glass, Light and Optical Experimentation

Gaignon’s practice is rooted in technical experimentation with glass and reflective coatings. Published accounts date his interest in a historic Venetian method of making convex mirrors with silver amalgam to 1999. He then taught himself how silver oxide reacts with glass, experimenting with shades and colors until he could control them, and he works with glass tinted in the mass, so that color runs through the material itself.

His works often incorporate concave and convex elements that interact to create multiple layers of reflection. These compositions may include smaller circular lenses, contrasting colors and highly polished brass supports. Their appearance changes with the observer’s movement and the surrounding environment: reflections shift, colors overlap, and architectural space appears to expand or contract within the curved surfaces. The resulting works function simultaneously as sculpture, optical experimentation and objects of contemplation.

The Mirror as a Contemporary Sculpture

A central characteristic of Gaignon’s approach is the transformation of a familiar object into an independent work of art. The circular mirror becomes an abstract composition in which color, material and depth take precedence over conventional reflection. His palette ranges from luminous gold, rose and violet to deep blue, green and black, and the integration of multiple lenses introduces a sense of movement and visual complexity.

Although these works interact with their architectural surroundings, their significance extends beyond decoration. Each composition possesses a distinct sculptural identity and invites the viewer to experience the changing relationship between light, matter and perception.

International Recognition

Gaignon’s mirrors have been presented by galleries specializing in contemporary art and collectible design. His work was included in the design section of Cosmoscow in Moscow in 2020 with Booroom Gallery, and presented at Art Miami in 2024 by Galeries Bartoux.

His work also appears in interiors by prominent designers and decorators. Architectural Digest and its Spanish and Indian editions have published residences in East Hampton, Ibiza and Hyderabad that include his pieces, illustrating the versatility of his practice and its ability to engage with contemporary architecture while each work keeps its independence.

Artistic Legacy

Christophe Gaignon’s contribution lies in his reinterpretation of the mirror as a contemporary sculptural medium. Through distinctive glass treatments, optical experimentation and carefully constructed compositions, he creates works that exist at the intersection of art and design. Each mirror invites the viewer to discover a shifting relationship between the reflected world and the physical object itself.
