Chrome Series
Reflection becomes part of the subject in Hervé Lewis’s Chrome Series. In photographs such as Golden Skull 1, a polished surface catches the surrounding room, the camera and the human figure, folding several views into a single image. Metallic highlights and dark recesses turn the skull into both an object and a distorted mirror. These photographic still lifes bring a contemporary treatment to the imagery of vanitas, placing the spectacle of a gleaming surface beside the more unsettling presence of the skull itself.
