Beau Simmons has been a professional photographer since 2009. He made a name for himself in the fashion photography industry working with clients including Marc Jacobs, Guess Jeans, Free People, and Converse and was a go-to photographer for such agencies as Elite Models, IMG, and Ford Models.
When the fashion scene began to grind on him, he decided to pursue his love for the Western lifestyle and the wonder of the American landscape with his camera.
“I want my art to leave the viewer with a feeling of nostalgia while eliciting a series of emotions," says Simmons.
Working exclusively with film, Simmons uses the lost art of medium- and large-format photographHe takes inspiration from masters of fine-art film photography like Richard Avedon and Steven Shore and finds passion in capturing some of the forgotten lifestyles of our time. “By telling a story influenced by the Western culture,” he says, “my work focuses on preserving authentic moments and documenting what might be referred to as a lost era in today’s society.”Simmons’ photography has been featured at the prestigious Art Miami and in various fairs and exhibitions. We caught up with him for a Quick 6 conversation.
C&I’s Quick 6 With Western Photographer Beau Simmons
Beau Simmons and Bernard Markowicz, owner of Markowicz Fine Art.
C&I: What do you look for in great photography? What makes a great photo?
Beau Simmons: In my own definition, I believe what makes a great photograph is capturing a moment that elicits an emotional reaction for the viewer. If you can tell a story through a single image, that’s what makes it memorable and impactful to others.
C&I: What photographers inspire(d) you?
Simmons: I am inspired by the film photography work of Kurt Markus, Richard Avedon, William Eggleston, and Steven Shore.
C&I: What Western location have you photographed that you’ll never forget?
Simmons: Bighorn Mountains of Montana, where I was recently attacked by a bear while working on a ranch.
C&I: Favorite photo you’ve ever taken?
Simmons: I don’t have one. Each photograph has its own story and memories that hold a special place for me to look back on.
C&I: Best advice for photographers learning and growing their craft.
Simmons: Be patient. Never give up. Work harder than everyone else in the room.
C&I: What shot/photo shoot is on your bucket list?
Simmons: I like to keep most of my projects private until they are ready to be released to the public, but I think working with more celebrities, actors, and musicians and capturing an authentic version of their story is what I’m working toward.
