Banksy
Donut is a witty and sharply satirical piece by Banksy, depicting a giant sprinkled donut perched atop an American police van. The only other bursts of color are the van’s red and blue flashing lights, which draw attention to the absurdity of the scene.
The image plays on the enduring stereotype of American police officers and their supposed love of coffee and donuts, suggesting—humorously yet critically—that they might prioritize their snacks over the safety of the public. On a broader level, the piece can be read as a commentary on authority itself: if the police are merely enforcers, perhaps what they are truly protecting is not citizens, but the pillars of capitalism and commercialism, symbolized here by the oversized donut.
Donut was released in two editions of 299 signed prints each, referencing Krispy Kreme Doughnuts’ 2007 financial troubles, when the company was forced to close 299 stores. The prints were produced using an exceptionally fine screen process, capturing all of Banksy’s meticulously chaotic detail.
