Created for Richard Orlinski’s 2022 solo exhibition at Markowicz Fine Art in Dallas, the Dallas Collection connects the artist’s Kong sculptures with the visual identity of Texas. Color, graphic markings and variations in finish give these works a particular exhibition context within his wider practice.

A collection with an exhibition history

Born Wild in Texas, presented from October 15 to November 15, 2022, brought Orlinski’s work to the Dallas Design District. The Texas-themed sculptures were not simply examples selected from across his output: works were created for the occasion.

That origin changes how the collection can be approached. The regional references are part of the works’ history, connecting familiar Kong forms with a specific presentation at Markowicz Fine Art.

Kong Baril: color, gesture and scale

The barrel compositions bring an additional object into the figure’s gesture. In the Dallas works, graphic interventions and contrasting colors provide another layer to examine alongside the geometry of the sculpture.

The 45 cm Kong Baril Tag Dallas Edition and a 70 cm Dallas Edition offer different formats for considering that relationship. A further 70 cm work with Texas-inspired colors is documented separately in the gallery’s selection.

Comparing the individual works is more useful than treating the Dallas name as a uniform appearance. Photographs from several angles help distinguish the graphic treatment and the way it follows the sculpted planes.

The Dallas Cowboy works

The 37 cm Wild Kong Tag Mat Dallas Cowboy Edition and 45 cm Kong Baril Tag Mat Dallas Cowboy Edition introduce matte finishes into the group.

Here, the distinction between the Kong figure and the barrel composition offers a useful starting point for comparison. The collector can look at the posture, the treatment of the surface and the balance of color, then consider how each work might sit within a particular space.
