Emerging Artists 1978–1986: Selections from the Exxon Series

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, United States

A Guggenheim group exhibition revisiting the Exxon series, with Tom Lieber’s Rising reproduced in the accompanying catalogue.

Emerging Artists 1978–1986: Selections from the Exxon Series returned to artists presented through the Guggenheim’s Exxon exhibitions. Published for the 1987 presentation, Diane Waldman’s catalogue includes Tom Lieber’s Rising (1983), an acrylic painting acquired through the Exxon Corporation Purchase Award.

The exhibition situated his work within a wider selection drawn from the museum’s contemporary art programme. Its catalogue preserves both a reproduction of the painting and a biographical record of Lieber’s early career.
