This Is Not a Body

Its title nods to René Magritte's "Ceci n'est pas une pipe," and the exhibition plays on that same unease: forty-odd hyperrealist sculptures gathered to make visitors question whether they're looking at art or at life itself. After stops in Bilbao, Canberra, Rotterdam, Liège, Lyon, and Brussels, the traveling show lands at the Musée Maillol in an expanded version with previously unseen pieces. Carole Feuerman appears alongside pioneers of the movement, including George Segal, Duane Hanson, and John DeAndrea, as well as contemporary figures like Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan, and Berlinde De Bruyckere, her own contribution, General's Twin, sitting within a lineage of sculptors who have spent decades pushing realism past the point of comfort. Organized by Tempora and the Institut für Kulturaustausch, the exhibition traces how hyperrealism has evolved since its American origins in the 1960s, from an early fascination with consumer culture to a more recent turn toward psychic and emotional territory. At the Maillol, that history unfolds room by room, each sculpture daring visitors to look twice.
