Eva Armisén’s First Major Solo Museum Exhibition

Home marked Eva Armisén’s first major solo museum exhibition, presenting more than 200 works including paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures. First shown at the Hangaram Museum at Seoul Art Center in December 2018, the exhibition later traveled to three additional cities across South Korea.
Conceived as an invitation into Armisén’s most intimate universe, Home transformed the exhibition space into a sequence of rooms through which visitors could discover her art, her personal world and the creative process behind her work.

Entering Eva Armisén’s Home
Rather than presenting her work as a conventional retrospective, Eva Armisén conceived Home as an immersive journey through a place that felt both physical and emotional. Visitors moved through different spaces as though entering the artist’s own home, from welcoming shared areas to more intimate rooms revealing aspects of her creative process.
Bringing together more than 200 paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures, the exhibition offered an expansive view of Armisén’s artistic language. Her familiar characters, families and domestic scenes inhabited the galleries alongside large-scale installations, creating an environment in which everyday life became both subject and setting.
The photographs in the exhibition documentation reinforce this idea particularly well. Several galleries were designed around architectural forms resembling houses, while life-size sculptural figures, dining scenes and large wall drawings turned the museum into a world visitors could physically enter.
Painting as a Place of Refuge
The title Home also carries a more personal meaning. For Armisén, painting itself represents a place to return to, a private space of freedom and refuge. The exhibition therefore explored not only the idea of home as a physical environment, but also the emotional territory created through artistic practice.
This intimate dimension helps explain the accessibility of Armisén’s work. Family, affection, memory and ordinary experiences become recurring points of connection between the artist and the viewer, allowing deeply personal images to acquire a universal resonance.
First presented at the Hangaram Museum, Seoul Art Center, from December 7, 2018 to March 31, 2019, Home was met with strong public and critical response. Its success led the exhibition to continue across South Korea, traveling to Cheonang Cultural Center, Daegu MBC and finally Busan Cultural Center, where the tour concluded in March 2020.
According to the exhibition documentation, the Korean tour attracted an audience of more than 350,000 visitors, establishing Home as a significant milestone in Eva Armisén’s international career.
