Hervé Lewis & Aubade: The Art of Suggestion

From the Leçons de séduction to the photographer’s studio

A gesture, a line of lace, a story left open. Explore Hervé Lewis’s contribution to Aubade’s Leçons de séduction, from a campaign photograph in 2000 to the anniversary calendar of 2012–2013 and the later life of these images as signed prints.

A photograph does not have to reveal everything to hold attention. In Hervé Lewis’s work for Aubade, a small gesture can carry the scene: the position of a hand, the line of a shoulder, the meeting of lace and light. The frame leaves room for an imagined story. Sensuality emerges through composition rather than a fully explained encounter.

His contribution to the Leçons de séduction belongs to a campaign shaped by several photographers over time. What makes Lewis’s chapter worth revisiting is the opportunity to look closely at particular images, and then follow them beyond the advertisement into the studio and the photographic print.

Aubade’s Leçons de séduction: the expressive gesture

One documented example is lesson no. 35 from the autumn/winter 2000 campaign, attributed to Lewis in the Artus Enchères catalogue. The photograph directs attention towards the hands, held delicately before the body, while pale lace catches the light against a darker figure. With the eyes outside the frame, expression rests in the gesture itself.

Read as a composition, the image is a study in controlled contrasts. Soft material meets sharply defined contours; a restrained movement interrupts the stillness. The numbered lesson gives the photograph a verbal cue, but does not exhaust its meaning. There is space between what the words propose and what the viewer sees.

Inside the 2012–2013 anniversary calendar

Lewis returned to this visual world for Aubade’s collector calendar of 2012–2013, celebrating twenty years of the Leçons de séduction campaign. A contemporary making-of report by Le Journal des Femmes identifies him as the photographer chosen for the anniversary project and takes the reader into the shoot.

Seen alongside a finished campaign image, such studio documentation changes the experience of looking. The seemingly effortless photograph becomes the result of preparation and adjustment. It invites attention to the decisions behind the pose, rather than only to the effect of the final image.

A new context for the prints

In October 2022, Aubade and Artus Enchères brought campaign photographs into another setting: a charity auction supporting Ruban Rose. The sale included signed prints by Lewis and Michel Perez, produced for the occasion. The auction house also documented a signing session at Lewis’s Paris studio.

Campaign, calendar and signed print offer different encounters with a photograph. They should not be mistaken for the same object, but together they reveal how an image can outlast its original commission. For a viewer discovering Lewis through fine art photography, Aubade provides a starting point: look beyond the familiar brand and consider the light, the framing and the precise gesture that make the image work.
