Kaï

American, born 1992

KAI is a Los Angeles based multidisciplinary artist known for his deceptively simple, single-frame narratives and the recurring figure of the Imaginary Friend, or IF. Raised in a French-Tunisian and Mexican-American family, he began working in the streets of Los Angeles as a teenager before pursuing studies at the California Institute of the Arts and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Moving fluidly between painting, cement relief, printmaking, animation, sculpture and public installation, KAI uses an accessible visual language to explore love, ambition, materialism, responsibility and the tensions of contemporary life. His works range from intimate editions to monumental sculptures presented internationally, inviting viewers to recognize themselves within stories that are at once playful, tender and socially incisive.

About Kaï

Born and raised in Los Angeles, KAI developed his artistic language at the intersection of his French-Tunisian and Mexican-American heritage. This combination of cultures, languages and traditions shaped his interest in universal forms of communication and in the values that connect people across different backgrounds.

KAI began using the streets of Los Angeles as a canvas at the age of fourteen. From the outset, he was less interested in decoration than in storytelling, and particularly in the ability of a single image to contain an emotional conflict, a moral tension or a moment of recognition. He later pursued studies at the California Institute of the Arts and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. These experiences expanded his practice while preserving the immediacy and directness of his street-art origins.

At the center of KAI’s work is the Imaginary Friend, commonly known as IF. Anonymous, vulnerable and immediately recognizable, the figure acts as a visual stand-in for the viewer. Through IF, KAI constructs concise narratives about love, ambition, loneliness, generosity, materialism, environmental responsibility and the choices that define contemporary life. His images are often playful at first glance, yet their apparent simplicity gradually gives way to more complex questions about human behavior and social values.

Cement became one of KAI’s signature materials, connecting the physical language of the street with works created for galleries, public spaces and private collections. Over time, his practice has expanded to include painting, mixed media, hand-printed editions, animation and sculpture in bronze, stainless steel and other materials. Whether working at an intimate scale or creating a monumental public installation, KAI retains the same economy of gesture and the clarity of his single-frame storytelling.

Public space remains an essential dimension of his practice. His murals, interventions and large-scale sculptures have been presented internationally, from Los Angeles and Miami to Philadelphia, Saint-Tropez, Geneva and Venice. These projects allow his recurring themes to enter everyday life, creating encounters that are direct, accessible and open to interpretation.

Works such as Love vs Money, The Struggle, Endless Possibilities and Love Holds Us Together translate intimate human dilemmas into sculptural scenes of collective scale. Love is frequently present in these works, not simply as a romantic ideal, but as a force placed in tension with wealth, ambition, distance, responsibility and the pressures of contemporary society.

Across every medium, KAI seeks to communicate emotionally complex ideas through a visual language that remains clear and universal. His work does not prescribe a single answer. Instead, it invites viewers to pause, identify with its figures and reconsider the values that guide both personal and collective life.
