About this work

Déplacement optique C brings together reflective industrial materials within a compact, box-like construction. Metallic cylinders and surrounding surfaces create a layered visual field, while the electrical mechanism connects the work to Martha Boto’s exploration of movement as an artistic material.

In Boto’s wider practice, mechanical systems are not simply technical additions: they make the experience of looking unfold through time. Reflection, repetition and spatial ambiguity link the physical construction to the changing image perceived by the viewer. This provides a context for considering the work within the history of optical and kinetic art.
