Dganit Blechner
Israeli, born 1957
Dganit Blechner (born Tel Aviv, 1957) is an Israeli pop artist known for vibrant city collages and portraits of film and music icons. She builds a working video screen into some of her canvases, so that painting, printed layers and moving image share a single surface.
Biography
Dganit Blechner was born in Tel Aviv in 1957 and studied at the Camera Obscura school of visual arts, the Avni Institute of Arts in Jaffa and Ramat-Gan College for the Arts. She lives and works in Tel Aviv, where she runs two galleries in the Dan Tel Aviv Hotel.
Cities and icons
Blechner’s pop vocabulary rests on two subjects: the great cities of the world, rendered as dense, colourful collages of streets, signs and landmarks, and the stars of film and music. Her surfaces are built in layers — printed images on varied supports, transparent fabric, laser-cut wood and fabric — then finished by hand with acrylic, oil and car paint.
Painting with video
Her most distinctive works integrate a video screen into the canvas itself, so that part of the picture moves while the rest stays still. In a city piece such as 175th Street, the painted street and the moving image belong to the same composition — a hybrid of collage painting and video art.
Exhibitions
Since 2006 her work has been shown by galleries in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, New York, Paris, Brussels, Saint-Tropez, Marseille, Istanbul, Singapore and San Francisco, and in 2008 at Bel Air Fine Art in Geneva. In 2014 she was one of six artists in Israeli Pop Art at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
