JERKFACE

JERKFACE was born in 1982 and raised in Queens, New York. Working under a pseudonym, he first developed his practice through drawing, graffiti and murals, using the scale and visibility of the street to test how quickly an image could be recognized. Familiar animation became his principal source material, but he approached it less as fan tribute than as a flexible system of shapes, expressions and cultural memories.

A JERKFACE composition rarely presents a character in a conventional pose. Heads repeat across the surface, eyes and mouths detach from bodies, and figures are cropped or folded into dense geometric structures. This process turns narrative imagery into pattern. Viewers may identify a character immediately, then lose and rediscover it as the composition shifts between figuration and abstraction.

Nostalgia is an important point of entry, especially for audiences who encountered the source material in childhood. Yet the works also examine how corporate entertainment becomes a shared visual language across generations. By disrupting the original image, JERKFACE separates recognition from ownership and asks what remains when a character is remembered imperfectly, repeated endlessly or absorbed into personal experience.

His murals adapt this strategy to architecture. Repeated figures can wrap corners, activate long walls or establish a visual pulse across an urban façade. In studio paintings and editions, the same vocabulary becomes more compressed, with clean outlines, saturated color and recurring motifs such as donuts serving as formal links between different bodies of work.

JERKFACE’s practice sits between street art, Pop appropriation and geometric design. Its accessibility comes from imagery people already know; its distinctiveness comes from refusing to leave that imagery unchanged. The result is a body of work in which memory operates like collage, preserving fragments while constantly rearranging the whole.
